Justin Shull was born in Newport, New Hampshire in 1982 and currently lives and works in Traverse City, Michigan. Justin received a BA in Studio Art from Dartmouth College and a MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers. His work has been exhibited and collected nationally, and he has won several national awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the College Art Association, and the International Sculpture Center.

Justin's landscape paintings are a celebration of color and the outdoors. They are also meditations on how we shape, interact with, and are shaped in return by our environments: these are paintings as much about the world we make as they are about the world that makes us. The landscape is a space of expansive possibility, and it is also a space of imposed boundaries. The sky is limitless, while the road below offers a prescribed path. The fence creates an enclosed garden, while plants attempt to disregard those confines. The trees and shadows, skies and roads, rivers and fences, figures and buildings that feature in my landscape paintings all contribute to an unfolding drama in which human action and intention is set against the rhythms and logic of the natural world. In these paintings, a playful exploration of the pictorial tradition meets an ongoing inquiry into the nature-culture divide.
